Weekly Golf Tip with JC Bacon PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

Tip of the week Uphill/Downhill lies:
Similar to last weeks tip on side hill lies, sometimes we find ourselves with a down hill or up hill lie.  The easiest of the two is the up hill, it usually is going to get up in the air much easier, however, many times it gets up too high, therefore, costing some distance.  So for example, if you have an up hill 135 yard shot, normally a 7 iron, you might want to try at least a 6 iron, maybe a 5 depending on how severe the lie is.  The breeze has a bit to do with club selection also, down wind, maybe an 8 iron, into the wind most likely the 5 iron.
Down hill lies are more difficult, because it is much harder to get the ball airborne.  I would not suggest trying to hit a hybrid or fairway metal on this shot due to the lack of loft on these two clubs.  I would try 6, 7 or 8 iron to make sure the ball gets in the air, to advance the ball as far as possible toward the hole.  On both of these shots, there is a constant fundamental:
Keep your body and weight distribution at the same angle as the hill.  If you try to keep your stance like a normal shot, you will find yourself swinging into the hill on the uphill, causing the ball to have a knuckle ball effect and not going very far.  Down hill shots you will find yourself hitting behind the ball more often if you do not line up your address at the same angle of the hill.
For any questions on this tip or any part of your game, contact your local PGA or LPGA Professional.
Until next time, may your lies be level

Weekly Golf Tip with JC Bacon PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

This weeks tip from PGA Golf Professional JC Bacon

Side hill lies:

Unfortunately we sometimes find ourselves in a side hill lie.  If the ball is above your feet, remember a couple of things to help you hit this shot.  The ball will tend to go to the left(right hand players) off this lie so aim to your right.  Also the ball is closer to you so you might want to choke down on the club to avoid hitting behind the ball.  A ball below your feet, the ball will tend to go to the right, and is further away from you.  Try to use as much of the club as possible, and if you need to bend your knees to get closer to the ball, please do that.

Any questions on this tip or any part of your game, contact your local LPGA or PGA professional.  Until next time, may your lies always be level.

Until next time, JC Bacon, PGA Professional

Los Lagos Golf Club Weekly Golf Tip with JC Bacon, PGA Professional

Tip of the week- Long distance or fairway bunker shots

Last week we covered green side bunker shots, this week it is the long distance or fairway bunker shots. Most fairway bunkers do not have a deep lip on them so this allows us to play this shot a bit different. Unlike the greenside bunker, on this shot the ball should be hit first. The ball will come out on a lower trajectory, however, this will allow more distance which is what we are looking for out of fairway bunkers. Play the ball toward the back of your stance, try to strike the ball first while hitting down on the ball. If you find yourself in a bunker with a high lip, then the best thing to do is to revert back to a greenside bunker shot, get yourself out of the bunker and complete the hole.

We hope this helps in the event you find yourself in a fairway bunker. For more information on this shot or any other part of your game contact your local PGA or LPGA Golf Professional.

Tip of the week- Bunker Play

Unfortunately many times we find ourselves having to play out of some bunkers during our round. Green side bunker shots can be intimidating but sometimes are not quite as difficult as we make them out to be. Try these tips to improve your bunker play:

The clubface must be open at address to maximize the loft of the club. Remember to aim your body to the left (right handed players) to compensate for the open clubface. The clubhead path should start by taking the club on the outside, and bring the club on the inside at impact. Outside-in or (cutting across) swing path. Be sure to aim 1″-2″ behind the ball and allow the sand to help take the ball out of the bunker.

We hope this helps your bunker play, with any questions on this shot or any part of your game contact your local PGA or LPGA Golf Professional.

Until next time, may you have more “sandies”, JC Bacon, PGA Professional

Tip of the week- Tee Shots

The tee shots are the favorite shot of many golfers, because the ball sits on a tee and easier to hit. But the USGA Rules only allow the use of a tee on the first shot of each hole. So we try to make the best of the shot by following the these tips:

Play the ball toward the front of your stance with your driver, remember your driver only has between 8 and 12 degrees loft, so by playing the ball forward, it helps get the ball air born. With the ball teed up, this is one of the only shots that the club is actually moving upward in the swing. The idea is to try to pick the ball off the the top of the tee as clean as possible. Exception: using a tee on a short par 3 hole, hitting a mid to short iron, you should still hit down on the ball.

For any help with this or any part of your game contact your local PGA or LPGA Professional

Until next time may your drives be long and straight
