Weekly Golf Tip with JC Bacon PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

Tip of the week Uphill/Downhill lies:
Similar to last weeks tip on side hill lies, sometimes we find ourselves with a down hill or up hill lie.  The easiest of the two is the up hill, it usually is going to get up in the air much easier, however, many times it gets up too high, therefore, costing some distance.  So for example, if you have an up hill 135 yard shot, normally a 7 iron, you might want to try at least a 6 iron, maybe a 5 depending on how severe the lie is.  The breeze has a bit to do with club selection also, down wind, maybe an 8 iron, into the wind most likely the 5 iron.
Down hill lies are more difficult, because it is much harder to get the ball airborne.  I would not suggest trying to hit a hybrid or fairway metal on this shot due to the lack of loft on these two clubs.  I would try 6, 7 or 8 iron to make sure the ball gets in the air, to advance the ball as far as possible toward the hole.  On both of these shots, there is a constant fundamental:
Keep your body and weight distribution at the same angle as the hill.  If you try to keep your stance like a normal shot, you will find yourself swinging into the hill on the uphill, causing the ball to have a knuckle ball effect and not going very far.  Down hill shots you will find yourself hitting behind the ball more often if you do not line up your address at the same angle of the hill.
For any questions on this tip or any part of your game, contact your local PGA or LPGA Professional.
Until next time, may your lies be level

Weekly Golf Tip with JC Bacon PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

This weeks tip from PGA Golf Professional JC Bacon

Side hill lies:

Unfortunately we sometimes find ourselves in a side hill lie.  If the ball is above your feet, remember a couple of things to help you hit this shot.  The ball will tend to go to the left(right hand players) off this lie so aim to your right.  Also the ball is closer to you so you might want to choke down on the club to avoid hitting behind the ball.  A ball below your feet, the ball will tend to go to the right, and is further away from you.  Try to use as much of the club as possible, and if you need to bend your knees to get closer to the ball, please do that.

Any questions on this tip or any part of your game, contact your local LPGA or PGA professional.  Until next time, may your lies always be level.

Until next time, JC Bacon, PGA Professional

Los Lagos Golf Club Weekly Golf Tip with JC Bacon, PGA Professional

Tip of the week- Long distance or fairway bunker shots

Last week we covered green side bunker shots, this week it is the long distance or fairway bunker shots. Most fairway bunkers do not have a deep lip on them so this allows us to play this shot a bit different. Unlike the greenside bunker, on this shot the ball should be hit first. The ball will come out on a lower trajectory, however, this will allow more distance which is what we are looking for out of fairway bunkers. Play the ball toward the back of your stance, try to strike the ball first while hitting down on the ball. If you find yourself in a bunker with a high lip, then the best thing to do is to revert back to a greenside bunker shot, get yourself out of the bunker and complete the hole.

We hope this helps in the event you find yourself in a fairway bunker. For more information on this shot or any other part of your game contact your local PGA or LPGA Golf Professional.

Tip of the week- Bunker Play

Unfortunately many times we find ourselves having to play out of some bunkers during our round. Green side bunker shots can be intimidating but sometimes are not quite as difficult as we make them out to be. Try these tips to improve your bunker play:

The clubface must be open at address to maximize the loft of the club. Remember to aim your body to the left (right handed players) to compensate for the open clubface. The clubhead path should start by taking the club on the outside, and bring the club on the inside at impact. Outside-in or (cutting across) swing path. Be sure to aim 1″-2″ behind the ball and allow the sand to help take the ball out of the bunker.

We hope this helps your bunker play, with any questions on this shot or any part of your game contact your local PGA or LPGA Golf Professional.

Until next time, may you have more “sandies”, JC Bacon, PGA Professional

Tip of the week- Tee Shots

The tee shots are the favorite shot of many golfers, because the ball sits on a tee and easier to hit. But the USGA Rules only allow the use of a tee on the first shot of each hole. So we try to make the best of the shot by following the these tips:

Play the ball toward the front of your stance with your driver, remember your driver only has between 8 and 12 degrees loft, so by playing the ball forward, it helps get the ball air born. With the ball teed up, this is one of the only shots that the club is actually moving upward in the swing. The idea is to try to pick the ball off the the top of the tee as clean as possible. Exception: using a tee on a short par 3 hole, hitting a mid to short iron, you should still hit down on the ball.

For any help with this or any part of your game contact your local PGA or LPGA Professional

Until next time may your drives be long and straight

Weekly Golf Tip By JC Bacon, PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

Ball Position for different shots-

For most golf shots I recommend keeping the ball centered in your stance. However, your tee shots and fairway shots should be played slightly forward, more so with the driver. For low trajectory pitch shots or to keep the ball low play the ball toward the back of your stance.

For any questions on this tip or any other part of your swing, contact your local PGA or LPGA Professional.

Until next time may your shots be pure, JC Bacon PGA Professional

Weekly Golf Tip with JC Bacon PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

Starting the swing:

Starting your golf swing, many times is the beginning of the reason we sometimes are struggling with our game. I have seen a number of students pick the club off of the ground, way too soon. By doing this it can cause a “chop” swing resulting in a shot that takes too much turf, and the ball not being hit as cleanly as it should be. Take the club back “low and slow” to create a smoother downswing and follow through to get more “clean” hits. This is especially true with your longer clubs. Think about a triangle formed along your shoulders, going down the inside of each arm to your hands on the club. Keep that triangle in tact, without bending your elbows or wrists for at least the first 12 inches of your backswing. This will create more shoulder turn which, in some cases may create higher clubhead speed, resulting in a few more yards. But more importantly, creating more “solid” hits.

Any questions about this tip or any part of your game, contact your local PGA or LPGA Professional.

Until next time, line it up and hit it solid!

Weekly Golf Tip with JC Bacon PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

Week 3 Tip Pitching/Chipping Part Two:

Last Week we covered the “pitch-n-run” low trajectory. This week we will cover the opposite type of chip shot, the lofted shot.

This shot should be used with your pitching wedge, sand wedge, or the gap (approach) wedge. Whichever club in your bag has the most loft. This is the shot you will need if you need to get over a bunker or any obstacle, or if the hole is cut very close to the edge of the green, (very little green to work with from your lie).

The ball should be played in the center of your stance, with your hands (at address) in front of the ball. You should line yourself up a bit to the left of your target, and slightly open the clubface. Remember the club you choose is one of the most lofted clubs you have, so let the loft of the club get the ball up in the air by trying to strike the shot as close to the base of the ball as possible (club motion going down at impact). Trying to get the ball airborne with a “scooping” type motion will usually result in the ball sailing across the green. This shot takes some practice and patience, keep working on it and you will see your chip shots get closer to the hole.

Any questions on this shot or any part of your game, contact your local PGA or LPGA Professional.

Until next week, may your birdies be plentiful!

Weekly Golf Tips with JC Bacon PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

Week 2 Chipping/Pitching

Around the green we usually are going to play one of the two different types pitch shots. The first one I will cover in this tip is the most popular, and the highest percentage shot to play, the “pitch-n-run”.

Usually hit with a 5,6, or 7 iron or in some cases you can use one of your hybrids, and played like a putt, using almost all arms and shoulders. Play the ball off of  your back foot, making sure your hands are ahead of the ball at address. The stroke is much like a putting stroke, make sure your hands stay ahead of the ball through impact. The result should be a low flying shot that will roll most of the way to the hole. This shot should be played when you have only a few feet of the apron to hit over, and a lot of green between you and the hole.

With any more help with this shot or any part of your game, contact your local PGA or LPGA Professional

Weekly Golf Tips with JC Bacon PGA Professional at Los Lagos Golf Club

Week 1- Putting

Putting is a personal game, pick a putter that looks and feels good to you. Here are a few basic fundamentals to keep in mind in your putting game:

  • Try to keep your eyes directly over the ball at address
  • Do not hold the putter too tight, it can cause a “jerky” type stroke
  • Keep the putter low to the ground on the backswing, minimize wrist movement as much as possible
  • Practice 3-5 foot putts to increase confidence and decrease 3-putt greens
